WRINKLE TREATMENT

While race and ethnicity account for a wide array of skin colours, the fundamental makeup of human skin is similar. The variety we see in skin colour is simply the result of varying proportions of the pigments melanin, carotene and haemoglobin, which occur in the epidermis, dermis and the red blood cells within the capillaries of the dermis, respectively.

Black and Indian people have higher proportions of melanin, while Asian people have more carotene, and Caucasians have a translucent epidermis that causes the pink tones of haemoglobin to be more apparent.

At the risk of oversimplifying a complex process, in terms of aging the key component is the skin’s own naturally occurring sun block, melanin.  Sun damage being the number one cause of premature aging, in a process known as photoaging, it stands to reason that the more melanin you have, the slower your skin will age. It’s the primary reason that Black and Indian people age slower than Caucasians do.

Stress Aging
Unlike photoaging, stress aging does not discriminate on the grounds of melanin content! As society becomes increasingly westernised and urbanised, stress affects people of all races and it shows on our faces.

So how does stress affect the skin?  It starts with our hardwired ‘fight or flight response’, where the hypothalamus responds to stress situations by initiating a sequence of nerve cell firing and chemical release, to prepare us to fight or flee from threat. While this is very handy if you’re staring down a lion or facing a real life or death situation, it’s overkill when the stress is the result of non life-threatening pressures.

Still, fight or flight is beyond our control and its effects are devastating on the skin. When triggered, it releases the hormones adrenalin, noradrenalin and cortisol, which cause blood vessels to constrict, resulting in poor circulation and decreased blood supply to the skin, which in turn results in dry, flaky skin that is prone to irritation. Incidentally, dark skin is typically oilier than fair skin - another reason that it ages slower.  Stress and its drying effect on skin however is the great equaliser and the reason darker skins are losing their aging advantage.

If you recall a moment of extreme stress, you will likely remember feeling breathless. Shallow breathing is another bodily response to stress that is counterproductive to skin health. It reduces the supply of oxygen to skin, which over time causes the skin to lose its plumpness and glow and results in the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers like Restylane and Perlane, which contain hyaluronic acid are amazing in their ability to plump out skin, soften lines and restore the youthful contours of an aging face, regardless of race or skin colour. Since hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body, as a component of connective tissue, side effects are rare and usually limited to temporary soreness and minor bruising which last no more than a week. The wonderful youthful effects are thankfully more enduring, with patients reporting results that last anywhere between six months and a year.
