Sweating

HOW IS EXCESSIVE SWEATING TREATED?

Medi-Sculpt™ has been successfully treating people with Botulinum Toxin for underarm sweating. This medical condition is termed axillary hyperhidrosis. It is estimated to affect approximately 1% of the population. Although most people associate excessive sweating with the underarm area it can occur in other focal parts of the body, such as the hands, or feet, or it can be more generalised affecting the whole of the body.

ARE THERE COMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH HYPERHIDROSIS?

Although there are no known long term complications associated with excessive sweating, people who suffer from this embarrassing condition can find that it dramatically affects their confidence in social or work situations resulting in a reduction in their quality of their life. Normal antiperspirants and deodorants are generally ineffective in providing adequate relief from the symptoms of excessive sweating.

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?

Tiny amounts of a Botulinum Toxin are injected every centimetre or so in the armpit. Botulinum Toxin works by reducing the effect of local nerves stimulating the sweat glands. This results in the production of less sweat.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?

The procedure takes around half an hour for both armpits, and will start to reduce sweating in two to ten days following treatment.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS FROM THE TREATMENT?

This treatment is simple, safe and virtually painless - the only side effects may be very minor bruising following treatment in the armpits.

HOW LONG WILL THE EFFECTS LAST?

Most people find relief from excessive sweating for around six months, with some claiming relief for one year or longer. Re-treatment is necessary when excessive sweating returns.

WHAT IS THE COST?

Costs may vary depending on the amount of Botulinum Toxin used. Prices start from R4 000 and some medical aids such as Discovery can reimburse you up to R2 500.

WHAT ADVICE IS THERE TO HELP REDUCE SWEATING?

Our doctor will often give initial advice relating to lifestyle changes such as:

- avoiding stress;
- wearing loose fitting cotton clothing;
- avoiding spicy or heavily salted food;
- maintaining meticulous personal hygiene.

There is also a wide range of freely available deodorants and anti-perspirants that you may find help to reduce sweating to some extent.
